Why choose this journey
For discovering a Gulf capital that preserves a genuine cultural identity while offering beaches, luxury resorts and outstanding hotels. Muscat is equally suited to a romantic getaway, a family stay, or the start of an itinerary in Oman. Between Mutrah Souq, major contemporary landmarks, the sea and the mountains, the destination offers enough variety to warrant several nights.
Capital of the Sultanate of Oman, Muscat stretches between the Gulf of Oman and the arid ridges of the mountains, offering a face very different from the Gulf’s great metropolises. Here, there are few skyscrapers: white architecture, mosques, forts, gardens and sea-facing districts shape an elegant city that retains a strong Omani identity.
Its heritage is a compelling reason to stay for several nights. The spectacular Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Royal Opera House, Al Alam Palace and the National Museum offer a window onto the country’s architecture, history and culture. In Old Muscat and around Mutrah, historic forts, the corniche and the traditional souq create a far more timeworn, maritime atmosphere.
Muscat is also a beach destination in its own right. Qurum Beach, the coves of Bandar Jissah and the coastlines around the capital make it easy to combine sightseeing and relaxation, with a particularly strong luxury and resort hotel offering. Sea excursions, beaches, mountains and desert landscapes are all easily accessible from the city.
Lastly, the capital is an excellent gateway to discovering Oman: its international airport makes it easy to start or end an itinerary to Nizwa, the Hajar Mountains, the wadis or the desert. Its calm atmosphere, high hotel standards and the contrast between culture, sea and natural landscapes also make it a true stay destination, not merely an arrival stop.
