The Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Beijing is spread across the historic lanes of Caochang, at the heart of the Chinese capital’s central axis. Opened on September 2, 2024, it is not a classic hotel building, but a collection of former residences arranged around traditional courtyards. Around 83% of the preserved structures are original, creating a rare immersion in hutong architecture while remaining close to Qianmen, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.

The hotel has just 42 independent courtyard homes, with floor areas ranging from 103 to 525 m². Each residence has its own private courtyard and combines traditional timber frames, gardens, large openings, contemporary Chinese art and modern technological comfort. Some layouts include multiple bedrooms, living rooms and reception spaces, giving more the feeling of occupying a private home than a conventional suite.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental offers three treatment rooms, including a double suite, as well as personalised programmes inspired by Chinese traditions. The Qiyuan Healing Space, the tea house and the relaxation areas favour a meditative approach to wellbeing. The fitness centre completes the offering with yoga, Pilates and tai chi sessions, but the property does not have a large resort-style pool.

Dining includes four complementary venues. Yan Garden by Chef Fei showcases Cantonese and Chaozhou cuisines, while VICINI offers Italian cuisine in a more relaxed atmosphere. Maple Lounge hosts tea ceremonies and afternoon tea around a century-old maple tree, while the TIAO bar, inspired by hutong culture, has joined the Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026 ranking.
