There are first trips, those where you check off the must-sees, camera in hand, subway map folded in your pocket. And then there are the subsequent ones\u2014those where the city ceases to be a list to accomplish and becomes familiar territory. You no longer rush. You return. <\/p>\n\n

After several stays, you end up creating your own New York: a museum you return to without ever tiring, a handful of addresses you keep preciously, and a few refuges that guidebooks never mention. New York abounds with places the crowds ignore\u2014and it is precisely there that its soul hides. Behind the unremarkable storefront of a caf\u00e9 on 27th Street lies one of these secrets: by day, an excellent espresso is served; by evening, a hidden door opens onto a speakeasy bar with a Prohibition spirit, a discreet homage to Nikola Tesla who once lived within these walls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Favorite Hotel<\/h2>\n\n

If one had to retain only one address for staying in New York with a sense of refinement, it would be this one. Perched atop the Deutsche Bank Center, nearly ninety meters above Columbus Circle, the Mandarin Oriental dominates the city without ever detaching from it. <\/p>\n\n

Access is through a spectacular lobby on the 35th floor, before reaching one of the 244 rooms and suites, perched between the 38th and 54th floors. New York does not lack icons, and it would be a shame to ignore them.
