Perhaps it’s the view of the Bosphorus, this expanse of water separating Europe from Asia, or perhaps the fascinating blend of ancient history and modern life unfolding on every street corner. Whatever it may be, Istanbul possesses an atmosphere found nowhere else.

As I wandered, I moved from the historic alleys of Sultanahmet to the lively quays of Karaköy, from spice-scented markets to elegant terraces overlooking the strait. Each district seemed to tell a different story. Here, the remnants of Byzantium stand alongside the legacy of Constantinople and the vitality of a modern metropolis of over fifteen million inhabitants.

What struck me most was undoubtedly this permanent impression of traveling between several worlds at once. Calls to prayer echo among skyscrapers, ferries tirelessly cross the Bosphorus while Ottoman palaces still watch over the city from their promontories. Istanbul does not seek to choose between its past and its future: it embraces both with remarkable elegance.

But what struck me most is not just its heritage. Wandering through the Grand Bazaar’s aisles or the bustling streets of the historic center, I discovered a vibrant city where traditions and modernity coexist naturally. Istanbul doesn’t just show its history; it brings it to life daily.

I hadn’t come just to visit a city. I wanted to understand what makes Istanbul so special. Over the days, I discovered a unique place where East and West have met for centuries, creating an atmosphere found nowhere else.

I particularly enjoyed the traditional pastries, baklavas, Turkish delights, and of course, Turkish tea served in its famous tulip glass. Whether on a terrace with a view of the strait or in a small eatery frequented by locals, Istanbul’s cuisine is an integral part of the experience and is worth the trip alone.

Beyond its monuments, it was Istanbul’s atmosphere that truly struck me. Wandering through the different districts, I discovered a city where traditions still hold an important place and where hospitality seems to be part of daily life.

I enjoyed observing the fishermen on Galata Bridge, the simit vendors in the bustling streets, and the ferries tirelessly crossing the Bosphorus. These simple scenes often tell more about the city than its grandest monuments.

One of the most memorable moments of my stay was undoubtedly discovering a traditional hammam. For a few hours, the city’s rhythm seemed to disappear, giving way to a true moment of relaxation, inherited from a centuries-old tradition. It is this authenticity and natural elegance that make Istanbul so endearing.
